The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has expressed concerns about the potential impact of Hyundai's planned water wells in Georgia on two endangered species of sturgeon in the and rivers.
NOAA warned that withdrawing large amounts of water from the Floridan Aquifer could harm the shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon by altering water temperature and oxygen levels in the rivers. Both species rely on the rivers for spawning and are considered vulnerable to disturbance.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has disputed NOAA's concerns, arguing that the aquifer is separated from the rivers by a clay layer and there is no prospect of the rivers being dewatered. However, the Ogeechee Riverkeeper agrees with NOAA that the loss of cooler groundwater springs could negatively impact the river temperatures.
The text also notes that Hyundai's water needs are being met by drawing from the Floridan Aquifer in a neighboring county, as Bryan County where the plant is located faces limits on aquifer withdrawals. This has led to concerns about the broader impact on local water resources.
‼️ The key issue is the potential harm to endangered sturgeon species from changes to river habitats and water conditions due to Hyundai's planned high-volume water withdrawals.
It's infuriating to see our beloved lowcountry landscape being destroyed right before our eyes. The passive observation needs to stop! We must come together and actively combat this issue by developing a strategic plan. It's crystal clear that the local government's efforts are a complete joke. We NEED to take matters into our own hands and protect our lowcountry for the sake of future generations. Are you ready to attend private community meetings and make a real difference? It's painfully obvious that our so-called "elected officials" are prioritizing personal interests over the needs of the people they represent.
Enough is enough!
