It’s that time again! Join Brooklyn Lace Guild and the Textile Arts Center on Sunday, August 16 from 6 to 9pm for our monthly Tat & Chat, a community hangout for lacemakers and fiber artists of all stripes (not a workshop).

Our member Glorimar Garcia will be hosting this time, and we will have a special guest Tjaša Gnedza from Slovenia, so don’t miss it!

All openwork techniques are welcome, from knitting and crochet to bobbin lace, needle lace, and tatting. Meet fellow lacemakers, get support for in-progress projects, and bring finished work or lace from your personal collection for show and tell. Sign up at the link in our stories and bio!

What does it feel like to live inside a pomegranate? (2026). bobbin lace made with linen and cotton thread, madder root and black tea dye, and gold metallic embroidery.

Inspired by Kamyar Mohsenin’s 2025 experimental short film of the same name, I started this surreal figurative piece in the dead of winter (coincidentally pomegranate season), exploring themes of isolation and collective memory. I was also really inspired by the visuals in Sergei Parajanov’s 1969 avant-garde film The Color of Pomegrantes and Persian and Mughal illuminated manuscripts. The script above says “one seed from heaven” based on folklore my mother used to tell me while I was eating pomegranates to make sure I finished every seed!

Excited to bring this piece with me to the Svetový festival čipky in Poland to be exhibited alongside other talented members of Brooklyn Lace Guild !

Project roundup from a very special Tat & Chat last night at the Textile Arts Center! We love welcoming new members and seeing everyone share techniques, stories, and skills together 🩷 Glorimar Garcia brought her mundillo pillow and some beautiful samples by a now 96-year-old lacemaker Maria Lopez. Elena Kanagy-Loux brought some lace cookies from the Peniche Lace Festival, and several members delivered work for a very special upcoming exhibition… more on that soon!

Brooklyn Lace Guild was honored to be invited to exhibit at the Peniche Lace Festival in Portugal! We learned about lace in Peniche as well as from the other exhibitors across Europe, and saw many wonderful old and new friends. We were proud to showcase some of the innovative work of our members, both in our booth and on the runway. It was our first official lace festival booth, but it certainly won’t be our last! Huge thanks to Município de Peniche Oficial for the generous welcome, and to everyone who worked to make the festival a dazzling success! Obrigada, and see you next time 💕🩷

New York Knicks 🏀 forever!! 🏀 Basketball and lace might seem like polar opposites, but MALLORY TOLCHER shows us that they mesh harmoniously. Canadian artist Mallory Tolcher explores the intersection of sports and feminized crafts like crochet and beading in her work, which includes lace-printed basketballs and ornamented hoops. New York City is popping off this summer with a historic Knicks win and World Cup events, so we have a feeling these intersections will only grow in their cultural relevance ⚽️ 🕸️
