Eskayel

Eskayel Textile design studio Founded in 2008 by Central St. Martins graduate Shanan Campanaro, Eskayel is a New York based surface design firm.

Shanan has worked in both graphic design and fashion, but has always been interested in interiors believing that the atmosphere and vibe of a room can transform ones mood. Having lived in many different spaces and more than a few countries, the importance of building an environment of true self expression and comfort in each of her homes became a huge priority and obsession. Eskayel’s mission is t

o create energetically positive, eco-friendly, wall-coverings, fabric, carpets, accessories and furnishings that are meant to last and bring value through innovation and beauty into the home and public spaces. We have a strong commitment to the environment and we aim to spread that message through our marketing, product description and manufacturing to effect education and loyalty to this cause. Nature and travel are what inspire us most. The colors of the Sunset and Ocean are a huge influence. Our design process usually starts with painting from pictures taken during traveling and deriving color schemes from nature. Water plays a big roll in the creative process, painting with aqueous inks and often soaking the paper completely, letting colors bleed and blend into one another. There is no vinyl in any of our inks or wallcovering substrates which is extremely important to us as VOCs are still a huge problem in the wallpaper industry. We only use natural linens and organic cottons for our fabric bases and for our commercial grade fabric and wallpapers we use recycled materials whenever possible. All of our inks are water-based. We produce locally in the northeastern United States, making all products to order so as to eliminate overproduction and reduce waste. We also give one percent of our total sales to environmental organizations through our partnership with One Percent for the Planet.

Cortile Alba hand knotted Moroccan weave rug in Merino Wool and Matka Silk with a 30mm pile height. Color, weave, material and pile height are just some of the variables we have to work with when designing these custom luxury rugs that are heirloom quality and made to last. I am now working directly with clients on all custom rugs and it would be my pleasure to work with you! 🤍🤍🤍

CRAZY story - we made this beautiful custom color of our Medina rug for a client to approve and we drove it to the UPS drop off but when we got there it wasn’t in the car!!!! It turns out Nicks hands were super full and he had placed it on the roof of our van and forgot to put it in the actual car. While we were en route we had heard a little bump or something as we went up a hill on a quiet residential street but we didn’t stop to see what it was. So we assumed that must have been the package falling off of the roof. We rushed back to that hill and that street fully expecting to find the package in tact but it was no where to be seen! I was convinced some good person had seen the packaged and taken it to safety and would contact us or even better drop it off to UPS for us and I figured there was nothing left to do but wait for this to happen. But who was feeling worse and worse by the minute for leaving it on the roof in the first place kept searching the street. Finally I convinced him we should go home and had done everything possible. As soon as we got home he literally jumped back in the car and was like “I’m looking again!”. Maybe 7 minutes later I get a text- “I found it”. It hadn’t fallen off the roof where we heard the bump it had somehow fallen off on the largest four lane road we have to take home - a busy high traffic road almost ten minutes from the office! The Box was destroyed and the rug was out of the box with tire marks and both were in the shoulder of the road! Luckily we found it and were able to clean it. Custom samples take 6 weeks to weave and are valuable and one of a kind, producing a new one would have set the project back by a month at least. The fact that the grease came out and the sample survived getting run over in the street is a testament to the durability of our luxury rugs. And is probably the only guy who would have gone back and actually found the rug sample for you! That’s the kind of guy you want to get your custom rugs from! At the end of the day it’s just us a small dedicated couple you are working with, I design them, he supports designers in proposing them and a small team in Nepal makes them.
