Another interesting tidbit about Hawaii overprint currency, is that it did not make economic sense to send the regular issue Federal Reserve notes back to the mainland, so they had it burned in Hawaii. They weren’t able to burn it fast enough before these notes became legal tender, so the US Government mandated Hawaii sugar refiners to halt production and operate 24-hours a day to instead burn Federal Reserve notes.
