I can’t believe it’s been a year since hosted their second fashion show Bergdorf Meets Basquiat. I had the best time designing this dress and participating in this event.
The design of the dress was inspired by high fashion garments that are a little unconventional but still breathtaking. Frills and ruffles aren’t something that are seen often but make a powerful statement when they are used. I used white fabric because I ultimately wanted the dress to be the canvas. A place for the embroidery to be displayed.
The embroidery was inspired by Basquiat and his artwork. Basquiat himself was a walking art piece. He had a major impact on fashion and self expression as well as impactful messages in his art. I learned how to embroider for the first time for this dress. I spent countless hours researching and practicing stitches to make this dress exactly how I envisioned it.
In total, the dress took about 50 hours to complete; 10 hours sewing, fitting, and adjusting, and about 40 hours embroidering. I’m so thankful that my art got to see the runway and so many people got to enjoy viewing my creation. Thank you so much to everyone who helped in any part of the creative process of this dress. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you 🙏
