A bedroom set in maple with an aged finish, perhaps a Swedish summer cottage feel.

Small rooms like this dormered bedroom require the custom furniture touch. The bed is bit lower giving one more head room. The “side table” is built into the wall. A retractable shelf makes the most of the limited space, a spot for a reading lamp, cell phone, and your latest book.

When I moved to Maine I had hoped to have an island on an island. I had to settle for a peninsula near a peninsula. All in all a pretty good compromise.
The peninsula is the start of my kitchen remodel. It adds storage space, plenty of divided drawers for pans and baking gear, and a pullout for Oona’s dog food. In rock maple with danish oil, shellac (to give it some age), and a couple of coats of water based poly/acrylic.
I had to finish the top edge with a subtlely sculpted breadboard end. A nod to my California roots, Greene & Greene inspired of course!

I am getting my business back up and running here in Mid Coast Maine. Let me know if any of you neighbors out there need some fine handcrafted furniture!

This chair literally rocks.
It’s called the Stuart, after the street find it is based on. Someone kicked it to the curb just because it was missing an arm, had a cracked leg, and a little bit of grunge to the finish. Turns out it had a nice “sit” though, a sought after quality in a rocker. I patched it up and vowed to copy that comfortable geometry. The 2nd pic shows them together, the 3rd is the namesake label on the back seat stretcher of the original.

From a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design, the Argyle Street Tea Room Chair. The sculpted top back stretcher makes this beauty sing. A slight bottom arch to accept the slats, a smooth curving top, and a utility signifying hand grab, and that is just the top five inches!

Some good news! The City of Pasadena has removed the “safety” barriers. No official word on future action but it looks like all the work and attention had an effect. The people of this neighborhood really stepped up, bringing in an independent arborist, alerting local news crews, and putting pressure on the city.
Speak up! We can make a difference!

A reproduction of a Gamble House table. In mahogany with ebony accents. The finger jointed drawer is accessible from both sides. Bonsai pairs well with Greene & Greene.

The ebony capped keys for the Charles Greene Sideboard. The client may or may not have peaked inside the drawer of a G&G original and spied the unique treatment of the key for the drawer lock. Once suggested it became a must.
A little research came up with a photo of some original skeleton keys given the G&G magic. The photos show my process.
Cut the blanks to length, drill for key, notch blanks, edge sand rough profiles. Attaching the key to the ebony blank allows clamping in the bench vise, filing and sanding to refine the shape. Drilling and pinning with a nail completes the process. One nailing cracked the ebony so I kept it as a souvenir!

A fairly faithful reproduction of the Charles Sumner Greene Sideboard. Designed for his home, it lacks much of the detail present in the Greenes’ other work, perhaps reflecting Charles’ personal style. It relies more on simple lines and balance. The only use of ebony is for the escutcheons, a marked departure. An interesting feature is the door hinge. What appears to be a piano hinge is actually 7 stacked flat back hinges. For some reason I can’t imagine it being done any other way, a testament to the design genius of those Greenes. A shout out to the always generous for help landing on the design for the adjustable shelf system, based on the Thorsen Sideboard. One change I made was the dovetailed drawers, originally they were a sliding dado/rabbet with some inherent weaknesses. Apologies to the purists.
