Along with the rest of our community, we were very sad to hear about the passing of an icon on Hatteras Island. I know that every longtime local has fond memories of Elvin Hooper. He was a friend to everyone and a mentor to so many. He passed on his knowledge and love of all things building and construction to so many students in his years as a teacher. If you own a home on Hatteras Island, or stay in one on your family vacation, there is a very high chance that Elvin’s influence is in it in some way. He very likely either helped to build it, taught at least one (if not all) of the carpenters or subcontractors who worked on it, or inspected the work as a building inspector. Please keep his family, friends, and students in your thoughts and prayers.
