🔬 Tuesday Sneak Peek | The Experimental Series

Before it was famous for the wrong reasons, the Air Crib was simply a father's attempt to make caregiving a little easier.

In 1944, B. F. Skinner designed the Air Crib — the Baby Tender — a temperature- and humidity-controlled space meant to keep an infant comfortable while sparing parents endless blankets and laundry. It was invention in service of the everyday: less fuss, more rest, for baby and family alike.

When it appeared in the October 1945 Ladies' Home Journal under the title "Baby in a Box," the sensational framing overshadowed the intent. Many confused it with Skinner's operant-conditioning chamber, and a myth took root around his daughter Deborah that grew more distorted with each retelling.

Deborah answered those stories in her own words: she was never a "lab rat," she was not harmed by the Air Crib, and she and her father had a wonderful relationship — a bond no rumor could rewrite.

Watch the video for a photo from the family's personal collection. 🖤

🤝 Sponsorship Opportunities: Skinner Session 2026 — Verbal Behavior In Action

Behind every practitioner using Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior is a body of work that someone chose to preserve, translate, and pass forward.

The B.F. Skinner Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the science of behavior analysis and keeping Skinner's contributions accessible to new generations — supporting the dissemination of behavioral science, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field, and providing resources for educators, researchers, practitioners, and students.

Sponsoring the Skinner Session is a direct investment in that work. It also offers your organization:

▪️ Recognition across the Foundation's website, social media, and during the Skinner Session
▪️ Registrations for your team to learn from and connect with leaders in the field
▪️ Opportunities at higher levels to engage directly with Foundation Board members and attend the Board Reception
▪️ Alignment with one of the most recognized institutions dedicated to the history, science, and advancement of behavior analysis

Most of all, sponsorship is a way to put values into action — a visible commitment to the scientific foundation of ABA and to ensuring high-quality behavioral science continues to shape where the field goes next.

Sponsorship levels are available from $250 to $5,000, so organizations of every size can participate.

🔬 Tuesday Sneak Peek!

It's probably not an exaggeration to call the operant chamber the most consequential thing Skinner ever devised. Thousands of experiments were born inside that small space — and much of how we understand behavior today was framed there.

But it didn't arrive fully formed. Skinner began where his contemporaries did: rats in mazes. What set him apart was noticing the small things. Retrieving rats grew tedious, so he built a path for them to return on their own. When they lingered, he found he could get clean learning curves from something far simpler — a rat reaching for food.

Worried that reaching was too deeply wired into the animal, he chose something arbitrary instead: a lever, picked mostly because it was easy to build. That modest decision became the centerpiece of his lab, and soon of learning laboratories around the world.

The "Skinner Box," as Hull first called it, is a reminder that foundational tools often begin as practical fixes.
