M-House occupies a man-made peninsula on Lake Massapoag once home to a six-story 19th-century industrial ice house that burned in truly spectacular fashion over a century ago.

The new residence acknowledges that history through Nakamoto Forestry Gendai Shou Sugi Ban yakisugi siding—specified at the client’s request—which offers a restrained, charred counterpoint to the site’s fiery past.

As the cedar weathers into muted pewter tones, the house quietly trades spectacle for endurance, allowing material aging and lake light to do most of the storytelling.
