"On my first ice rappel we had to climb over a berschgrund, which is where the ice of a glacier ends and the mountainside begins, but in the middle is a deep chasm. As I’m getting ready to finish the rappel, my partner yells up to me and says that I’m going to have to jump over it. I look at my guide who agreed with the decision and stood there thinking 'if I miss I’m going into the crack.'

So in that moment, I secured my axes, dug my crampons into the ice, closed my eyes, kicked back as hard as I could, and let go of the brake....to the sounds of the rope whizzing through the device. I lied still in the snow on my back looking into the oncoming squall. My friends face appeared above me and I thought, 'I wish I could do that again.' "

"Yesterday I took a lead fall and the bolt pulled off a sizable chunk of rock (first picture). It landed on my back, luckily missing my head, as I fell. 10 stitches, a rope burn, and a few bruises later, I'm feeling extremely lucky to have walked away from this one. Moral of the story: everyone wear your helmets! Swipe to see the carnage."

"I was pumped, unable to commit, and frustrated at myself for screwing up the sequence. I looked down at Paul, my belayer, and quickly shouted “Falling! Take, take, take!” My hands slipped out of the thin crack and I knew it was about to be a bad day. When my right heel impacted the ledge, it felt my shoe was packed with explosives and the reverberations shot up my leg. After lowering me to the belay ledge, we splinted my ankle with a .3 Camalot, .4 Camalot, and Euro Tape. The splint was enough to hold me for the three raps took us to the ground and the hike out. I’m now recovered and heading back to do the Edge in a week."
