We wanted to extend our condolences to the wonderful folks at Horton's Books and Gifts on the passing last week of sweet Mayah, the shyest of the famous Horton's bookstore cats. You can read about how CCHS was instrumental in bringing Mayah and Horton's together many years ago on our website--- carrollcountyhumane.org.

You will be missed, dear Mayah. It was a pleasure to know you and to help you find such a fabulous home.

Mayah, one of the long time feline residents at Horton's Books & Gifts, died at the age of 15 on Monday, September 21, 2020.

She was a proud rescue cat who was very pleased to take up her duties as one of the bookstore kitties. She thoroughly enjoyed the company of customers. During the Newstand days, sweet Mayah loved to sit in your lap while you drank your coffee, and was happy to check out the daily news headlines with you.

Mayah was heralded as the City of Carrollton's promo photo for some time and decided from that moment on that she was the queen of the bookstore. Mostly she reigned in the background, overseeing the rambunctious play of her compatriots, Poe and Dante, as well as more recently this year, young Savannah.

Mayah enjoyed parties held for her in the store with visitors stopping by to wish her Happy Birthday. She would pose for photos under the Christmas tree and thought cat treats were the best invention.

She enjoyed quiet moments of repose in the greenery outside the store on days the door was left open. She also had several favorite toys and was an unabashed shoe fanatic, rubbing up against them in delight. Mayah was indeed a gentle soul through and through.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honor Mayah is welcome to contribute to the “Chloe Fund” which was established in 2007 at the United Community Bank. The “Chloe Fund” (named after one of the previous well known and much loved bookstore cats), was established to help provide books to children who would otherwise not receive them, has worked with the help of the Carrollton Housing Authority, public and private schools, and the Carrollton Kiwanis Club to further its goal. The fund also assists the local Carroll County Animal Shelter to help them with their needs.
