and collaborated to make the Doernbecher Freestyle program to offer young patients the opportunity to design a limited-edition sneaker, apparel and equipment collection. Each year, six patient-designers work alongside a team of Nike designers to create unique releases.

Finnigan Joseph Mooney, 10 years old, has hypoplastic left heart syndrome and has endured over 13 heart surgeries. When it came to designing his custom Nike/Doernbecher Freestyle Dunk Hi SB shoes, Finn infused his lively personality into every detail. The bold yellow upper of the shoes features the words “THUMP THUMP,” symbolizing his resilient heart, while the Nike swoosh is stitched like the sutures from his surgeries. To make the design even more personal, Finn included his actual thumbprint on the outsole, making the shoes a true reflection of his unstoppable spirit.
