👁️ Putting In Contact Lenses: Six Steps for New Wearers

Contact lenses can provide clear, comfortable vision for school, sports, work, and everyday life—but success begins with the right fit and safe habits. Dr. Andrew Lu evaluates your prescription, corneal shape, tear film, eye health, lifestyle, and handling ability before recommending a lens.

New wearers also receive guidance on insertion, removal, cleaning, replacement schedules, and warning signs. Wash and dry your hands before touching lenses, keep them away from water and saliva, and never sleep in them unless specifically prescribed.

If a lens causes pain, redness, light sensitivity, discharge, or persistent blur, remove it and contact an eye doctor promptly. My Eye Consultants welcomes children, teens, and adults seeking personalized contact-lens care throughout Chandler and the East Valley, Arizona.

👁️ Contact lenses should feel comfortable, provide clear vision, and fit your eyes properly.

Dr. Andrew Lu provides personalized contact-lens examinations, fittings, and hands-on insertion-and-removal training for children, teens, and adults. Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu care for families throughout Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, and the East Valley.

Whether you are considering contacts for the first time, returning after a break, or struggling with your current lenses, our team can evaluate your eyes and recommend appropriate options.

Not all dry eye begins the same way. 💧

Two major tear-film patterns commonly contribute:

Evaporative dry eye

The eyes may produce tears, but those tears disappear too quickly. Meibomian gland dysfunction is a frequent contributor because the glands in the eyelids may not provide enough healthy oil to stabilize the tear film and slow evaporation.

Common clues may include:

Burning or irritation
Fluctuating vision
Symptoms aggravated by screens
Discomfort in wind, air conditioning, or dry environments

Aqueous-deficient dry eye

The lacrimal glands do not produce enough of the watery portion of tears. Contributing factors may include aging, medications, lacrimal-gland dysfunction, autoimmune disease, or impaired nerve-driven tear production.

Possible clues may include:

Persistent dryness
Irritation or scratchiness
Blurry vision
Frequent use of lubricating drops

Many patients have features of both patterns. Dry eye is multifactorial, so symptoms alone cannot reliably identify every contributor.

A comprehensive evaluation may assess tear volume, tear-film breakup, eyelids, meibomian glands, blinking, ocular-surface staining, medications, contact-lens wear, environmental exposure, and relevant health conditions.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu provide comprehensive dry-eye evaluations for patients throughout Chandler and the East Valley.

Your eyeglass prescription is not just one number. 👓

Each abbreviation gives the optical team different information about your eyes and how your lenses should be made:

OD: right eye
OS: left eye
SPH: spherical lens power, measured in diopters
CYL: amount of astigmatism correction
AXIS: orientation of that correction, measured from 1°–180°
ADD: additional near power for multifocal lenses
PD: distance between the centers of your pupils for lens positioning

A minus SPH value commonly indicates correction for nearsightedness. A plus value commonly indicates correction for farsightedness. Your two eyes may have different values.

Your glasses prescription also is not interchangeable with a contact-lens prescription. Contacts require additional measurements because the lenses sit directly on the eyes rather than in a frame.

Dr. Luis W. Lu, Dr. Andrew Lu, and the My Eye Consultants team serve patients and families throughout Chandler and the East Valley.

Green eyes are not actually made from green pigment. 👁️

Their appearance results from a combination of:

The amount and distribution of melanin in the iris
The structure of the iris
How light scatters through iris tissue
Variations across multiple genes
That final point matters because eye-color inheritance is more complex than the familiar classroom explanation of one dominant brown-eye gene and one recessive blue-eye gene.

OCA2 and HERC2 have major roles, but several additional genes contribute to the continuum of brown, hazel, green, gray, and blue eyes. This is why eye color can sometimes differ from what a family expects.

You may have heard that green eyes occur in exactly two percent of the global population. Although green eyes are uncommon, that precise worldwide statistic is difficult to verify through a consistent authoritative dataset—so we are leaving the number off the updated slide.

👁️ Your Child Scratched Their Eye—Should You Patch It?

A fingernail, pet, paper edge, branch, or toy can scratch the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. A corneal abrasion may cause sudden pain, tearing, redness, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or the feeling that something remains in the eye.

Do not let your child rub the eye, use leftover prescription drops, or apply a patch without medical guidance. Some medications may delay healing, mask worsening symptoms, or increase infection risk. Remove contact lenses if this can be done easily, and do not reinsert them.

Prompt examination is important when pain persists, vision changes, discharge develops, or the child cannot comfortably open the eye. An eye doctor can identify the injury, check for retained material, and recommend appropriate treatment.

👁️ A scratched eye can be extremely painful, even when the injury is difficult to see.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu provide urgent and comprehensive eye care for children and families throughout Chandler and the East Valley. An examination can identify a corneal abrasion, check for retained material or a deeper injury, and guide appropriate treatment.

Please call before arriving so our team can help determine the safest next step.

👁️〰️ Why Do Straight Lines Suddenly Look Wavy?

An epiretinal membrane, or ERM, is a thin layer of tissue that forms on the retina’s inner surface. Population studies suggest ERMs affect roughly 1 in 10 older adults, although estimates vary by age and population.

When an ERM affects the macula, it may contract and create wrinkling or traction. Many cause few or no symptoms and remain stable or change slowly. Others can make central vision blurry or wavy, causing straight lines, words, or doorframes to appear bent.

A dilated retinal examination and optical coherence tomography help confirm the diagnosis. Mild cases are monitored. If distortion or vision loss interferes with reading, driving, or daily activities, a retina specialist may discuss vitrectomy with membrane peeling. Treatment decisions are individualized.

👁️ Wavy or distorted central vision deserves a closer look.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu provide comprehensive retinal evaluations for patients throughout Chandler and the East Valley. A dilated examination and OCT imaging can help identify an epiretinal membrane and determine whether monitoring or retina-specialist referral is appropriate.

🧺 A Small Laundry Pod Can Become a Serious Eye Emergency

A pediatric eye-trauma study highlighted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology reviewed 535 children under age 16 in Northern Ireland. Chemical injuries represented 18% of presentations—and laundry detergent pods were involved in 44% of those chemical injuries.

The findings come from one regional population, but the prevention message applies everywhere: keep detergent pods sealed, out of sight, and completely beyond a child’s reach.

If pod contents enter the eye, begin rinsing immediately with plenty of clean, lukewarm running water for 15–20 minutes. Then contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and seek urgent eye care when advised—especially for persistent pain, redness, tearing, swelling, or vision changes.

Protecting young eyes starts with prevention—and knowing what to do when accidents happen.

👁️ How Much of Your Retina Can One Image Show?

Retinal imaging gives your eye doctor a documented view of the back of the eye. The Optos Daytona captures an ultra-widefield image spanning up to 200 degrees, or approximately 82% of the retina, in a single capture.

By comparison, a conventional 45-degree retinal photograph shows the central retina. A wider view helps the doctor examine and document the central retina and retinal periphery, where findings may occur.

At My Eye Consultants, ultra-widefield retinal imaging is part of the comprehensive eye examination. Your images are reviewed together with your history, symptoms, vision testing, and the doctor’s clinical examination.

Retinal imaging supports evaluation and long-term comparison, but it does not replace every examination technique. Dilation may still be recommended when clinically appropriate.

👁️ A comprehensive eye examination is more than checking how clearly you can read an eye chart.

At My Eye Consultants, ultra-widefield retinal imaging is part of our comprehensive eye examination. It provides Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu with a documented view of the central retina and retinal periphery to review alongside your symptoms, medical history, vision testing, and clinical examination.

💧👁️ What Keeps Your Eye’s Surface Smooth?

Every blink spreads a thin tear film across the eye, creating a smooth optical surface while providing moisture, lubrication, and protection. It is often taught as three components: an outer lipid layer, a watery aqueous component, and mucins near and within the ocular surface. Current science describes these components as more integrated than three sharply separated layers.

Lipids produced mainly by the meibomian glands help stabilize the tear film and limit evaporation. The mucoaqueous phase carries water, electrolytes, proteins, nutrients, and protective factors. Mucins support hydration, tear spreading, lubrication, and the epithelial barrier.

When this system loses stability, symptoms may include burning, irritation, redness, dryness, or fluctuating vision. Persistent symptoms deserve a comprehensive eye-health evaluation by a qualified eye-care professional.

👁️ Dryness, burning, irritation, and fluctuating vision can have several causes. A comprehensive evaluation helps identify which parts of the ocular surface and tear system may be contributing.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu provide personalized eye-health and dry-eye evaluations for patients throughout Chandler and the East Valley.

New or persistent symptoms should be evaluated rather than managed indefinitely with over-the-counter drops alone. Sudden vision loss, severe pain, significant light sensitivity, or an eye injury requires prompt medical attention.
