As a trainer it’s always fascinating to me, in a modern world we keep returning to ancient modalities to health and wellness. Cupping dates as far back as 1,550 B.C..
Cupping is a form of therapy that decompresses soft tissues using vacuum suction, unlike other forms of massage that compresses soft tissues. During cupping, the cup gently sucks to your skin and lifts underlying tissue into the cup (pulling instead of pushing on tissue like a massage).
Personally, I’ve only done dry cupping so can speak to my experience; it helps me. I put my body through a lot. I train hard. I live hard. I recover hard. I am consistent with mobility, sleep, protein, hydration, etc. I am extremely in tune to my body, it’s a superpower I highly recommend developing.
And with that, I know when I’m stressed I hold extreme tension under my left shoulder blade that pulls into my trap, lat, neck, chest and front delt. If it gets bad enough it will pull down into my bicep and cause numbness in my left hand. Deep tissue massage, muscle scraping and cupping are really the only way for me to get relief when it’s this bad.
With any 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 - PSA I hate this phrasing because it implies that this can’t just BE medicine by Western standards. And with our obesity rate approaching 50% it’s confusing to me because clearly Western 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 isn’t working, but I digress - you’ll hear plenty of people not bought into it. There isn’t a lot of research, sure, but if it works for you, why not? Of course always check with your doc if you have a pre-existing conditioning and find a good practitioner.
