Most Americans have never heard of Benjamin Rush.
But they should.
He signed the Declaration of Independence.
He served as a physician during the Revolution.
He helped shape American medical education.
He opposed slavery.
He promoted education.
And he believed that liberty could not survive without virtue.
Rush understood something our generation desperately needs to remember:
A nation is not preserved by laws alone.
It is preserved by the character of its people.
And character must be taught.
Rush believed education, faith, and freedom belonged together. He argued that Christianity shaped the moral foundation necessary for a free republic.
In other words, liberty was not just a political idea.
It was a moral responsibility before God.
That is why men like Benjamin Rush matter.
They remind us that America was not built merely by politicians.
It was built by people who believed truth mattered.
Virtue mattered.
Education mattered.
Human life mattered.
And faith mattered.
The doctor who helped build a nation understood that a free people must first be a moral people.
