Once you left the house, you were unreachable. Early 1990s: I would go to Destin for the day to shop, and stop by the pay phone outside of the gas station to call Mama (on the land line) before heading home. My missed calls were handwritten messages on the kitchen counter. Life was simple.

Unfortunately, I am traveling for a family reason and will have to postpone this JOY until next year. You all should go; it’s going to be amazing! Saturday 12-4! And I’ll somehow figure out how to offer all of this amazing vintage to you sometime in the very near future. This is one of my favorite finds from my time in Tennessee: a very well loved, well worn, broken and repaired, once fancy (and once handled) sugar bowl… or soup bowl? The chips & broken handles are smooth to the touch, one of my favorite qualities of a vintage piece. It reminds me that there was a time when items weren’t completely expendable, but were happily utilized, flaws and all. The handwritten note I found tucked inside reads:

Note: Lid gone (G.E. Marshall had replacement made of wood.) This bowl was used as a “soda bowl” by Marshalls during last half of 1800’s into early 1900’s. Is practically worthless as far as $ value but valued by me because of history.
