Clocked out 🍷and catching up on what was popular this month on thecorporatecurly.com/blog.

Your job isn’t that hard. Your manager is.
If you’re constantly exhausted, anxious, or second-guessing yourself, it might not be the work. It might be who you report to. This one puts words to what a lot of people feel but don’t say out loud.

How to explain a layoff in an interview (copy + paste)
Because no one tells you what to say when that question comes up. This is for anyone who doesn’t want to overexplain, overshare, or sound defensive while still being honest.

When one mistake feels like it could end your career
That tight-chest feeling after a small slip up? Yeah. We’re talking about why some workplaces make everything feel high stakes and what that does to your confidence.

I’ve been laid off. Now what?
After the shock wears off and the “let me know if you need anything” texts slow down, you’re left figuring out next steps. This one is about that exact in-between moment.

Friday CLOCK OUT 💻👩🏾‍💻✨💕

Weekdays can feel incredibly mundane when the work never really slows down. Finding small moments of joy and trying new things has become essential for me. Those little shifts make the workweek feel lighter and more balanced.

C — Commute
Listening to How to Talk to Anyone during my commute. I work with people from all walks of life, so continually improving my communication and engagement skills matters.

L — Look (Out of Office)
My first box arrived. About 90% of my closet is workwear, so I’m intentionally building my out-of-office style.

O — Outfit Staples
Loving these pieces from Investing in well-made staples makes getting dressed easier.

C — Creating Home
Working on a kitchen nook that will double as a breakfast nook. Creating a comfortable home on a budget is the goal. The small upgrades matter.

K — Keeping Balance
The has been the best reset. Finding ways to create balance outside of work is non-negotiable.

O — Overall Wellness
The goal is at least 20 minutes of movement, three times a week. Pilates and yoga have made consistency easier.

U — Useful Finds
Rebag is one of the best places to find quality, pre-loved designer pieces without paying full price.

T — Trying New Things
Yellow dragon fruit has been in rotation lately. Small changes keep routines interesting.

What’s your joy throughout the workweek?

When we talk about Black women’s unemployment rising to 7.3%, context matters.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment continues to impact Black women at higher rates than every other major demographic group, even during periods labeled as “economic recovery.”

For comparison:
• Black women: ~7.3%
• Black men: ~6.1%
• White women: ~3.1%
• White men: ~3.4%
• Overall U.S. unemployment rate: ~4%

That means Black women are experiencing unemployment at more than double the rate of White women, and well above the national average.

These disparities persist regardless of education level and tend to widen during layoffs, restructures, and cost-cutting cycles. BLS data shows Black women are often impacted earlier during downturns and face longer recovery timelines afterward.

This isn’t about individual effort or performance.
It’s about structural exposure.

Understanding the numbers matters because it reframes the moment. If you’ve been impacted, you’re not failing. You’re navigating a labor market where risk is unevenly distributed.

If you’ve been affected comment JOB RECOVERY.

The Job Recovery Guide exists for this exact moment.
It walks you through what you can focus on if you’ve experienced a lay off.

January recap ✍🏽

The most-read pieces on TheCorporateCurly.com weren’t light reads and that’s intentional.

Every article starts with naming the issue first. Hair discrimination. Body bias. Respectability politics. The unspoken rules no one trains you on but everyone enforces.

This is me building in real time. Not just as a creator, but as a founder shaping a platform that tells the truth and then hands you tools. Resources. Language. Strategy. So you’re not just surviving workspaces that weren’t built with you in mind, you’re navigating them with clarity.

If you read, saved, or shared in January, you’re part of why this brand exists.
More conversations. More receipts. More guidance ahead.

Today is 👑✨

Back in 2017 when I started blogging I didn’t really see too many women styling and wearing their natural hair into professional settings. Soo I started blogging with the intent of sharing natural hairstyles that you can wear into the workplace. And I’ll say that it’s been a beautiful journey thus far.

For those who’ve been here for a while, I TRULY appreciate you all 💕 For those new to this community, WELCOME!

My name is Nkechi. I’m a Nigerian-American corporate professional who has worked in corporate America for about seven years now. I love sharing about workwear, natural hairstyles, and career advice. My goal for the rest of the year is to share more in my series. SO TAP IN, more to come soon 👑💛

I got my eye on the weekend like 👀 do you feel like you have to amen outside of work hours to keep up?

What do you think about that second slide? I think if you want to make your job your everything or you don’t. Do what makes you happy 🤷🏾‍♀️😆

I am truly grateful that I love my job, and I genuinely enjoy the people I get to work with. But I’ve also prioritized leaving work at work bc I haven’t always had the chance to do that. I hope you can do. CHEERS to the weekend ❤️
