THIS IS A LONG ONE ๐
๐ค
Next month Iโll be celebrating 8 years in corporate America. Whew, what a ride it has been! My first job was at a major manufacturing company in an extremely rural town. It was an accelerated rotational program and I really feel like it set me up for a quick trajectory. It wasn't diverse, and honestly was the precipice for why I started Corporate Curly.
I really wish I would have vlogged throughout those years, because I've been afforded some beautiful opportunities. I was able to live in multiple states (expenses fully paid by companies), travel, gain new experiences, meet new people, and learn a lot! it's really been a blessing throughout the years. But moving upward has definitely come with its highs and lows. I am Nigerian though, Igbo to be exact, and we don't give up. ๐๐ณ๐ฌ
If I could look back on those years Iโd share 3 lessons :
1. They never lied when they said your network is your net worth. Cultivate genuine, meaningful relationships. ALL the time, at all times. You just never know how you could benefit each other in the future.
2. Seek out those opportunities that could help give you exposure and stretch you in ways that make you uncomfortable. Those are the periods where you will actually challenge yourself to grow the most.
3. As black women, we really do experience challenges simply bc of who we are. Seek out your support group, mentors, people who could help you through your journey. Find an organization where you are valued and find your tribe there.
When you look back on the history of Corporate America, these spaces truly were not created for us. However, I do believe that. If you find the right people in the right environment, the impact we can make is immense and we can truly thrive. ๐๐พ๐ค
