Lord of the Rings Holiday Bar by Vignettes



From the owners of the ReRoll Tavern, a game pub in North Kansas City, and of Apparition, a Halloween bar, comes Vignettes, a cocktail bar with live music centered around rotating pop culture themes. For the holidays, Edward Schmalz, Donald Lewis and Maggie Boone have turned Vignettes into The Shire pub from Lord of the Rings until Dec. 31. Open 7 days a week – Sunday through Thursday from 6 to 11pm and Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 1am – space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Behind the green hobbit house door, you’ll find magical creatures from Middle Earth ready to serve you cocktails. Try the Eleveneses, which serves two to three from a full teapot of either earl grey or cinnamon tea spiked with gin, honey and sugar, or the Orc, made with Tom’s Town vodka, beef bouillon, Worchester sauce and garnished with a piece of steak. To eat, enjoy the Lembas bread, a turnover made for a Took, or Second Breakfast, a Danish fit for a Hobbit – both made by Donut King, located in the same strip shopping center. First designed in 1934 the B-3 leather bomber became the military-issued cold-weather flight jacket. Aviators who manned the B-17s and B-24s in the skies over Europe in WWII came to rely on their B-3 jackets as they often flew for 8-9 hours in unpressurized cabins, where air temperatures could drop to more than 60 degrees below zero. The bomber was vital to the crew’s comfort as the crimp of the sheep's wool created insulating air spaces, naturally retaining heat and absorbing excess moisture generated by the body. It remains one of the warmest and most insulating bomber jacket ever made.
