Maria Montessori was an Italian doctor and teacher that taught children to be self-sufficient, and said “if they know how to tie their shoes and how to dress themselves, they will feel the happiness that comes from independence.”
I have always encouraged self-sufficiency and independence with my children. They are happier when they do things for themselves. Some ways I encourage independence at home is by having my daughters dress themselves, pack their backpacks, cut up their fruits and vegetables, help set up/clean up dinner table, clean up their messes, and pick out what books they want to read to me at bedtime.
How do you encourage independence in your household? And if a child can succeed in doing it by themselves, let them!
