The Hanig&Co. shoe project is a collaborative process that developed out of my love for this city, and for shoes. I have lived and worked my entire life in Chicago, with 45 years spent in my family’s business, Hanig’s Footwear. The project came from my desire to create a shoe that is crafted in Chicago, using leathers from Chicago, with an original style based on this city’s heritage of architectu
re and design. The project’s collaborators include Peter and Dan Hanig, and Leah Zimmerman of Hanig’s Footwear; and Sara McIntosh of the Chicago School of Shoemaking. More support comes from Horween Leather Co. of Chicago, and Vibram® USA. Our first two styles are women’s sandals, the “Ravenswood” and the “Halsted”, each having a unique urban design. We are using Horween waxed leathers that are both supple and durable, which results in a shoe that molds to the shape of the wearer’s foot. The Vibram® Ripple sole was created by Nathan Hack in the 1950’s to provide comfort and cushioning on hard surfaces. Additional comfort is provided by a cushioned footbed.
