APRIL FOOLS - YOU THOUGHT WE FORGOT OUR B-DAY?!?! YESTERDAY MARKED A NASTY NINETEEN YEARS OF BAITIN’ AND WOLFIN’! THANKS FOR ALLOWING US TO BE A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY FOR ALMOST TWO WHOLE DECADES. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT, YOUR PARTICIPATION, AND YOUR L💗VE!
Wolfbait opened its doors on April 1, 2006. Since then, we have expanded to carry over 300 Chicagoland makers, shakers, groovers, and rule-breakers. The shop name was derived from CHICAGO CONFIDENTIAL - an outdated book detailing the Windy City life. “Wolfbait” and “B-Girls” were used in this book as derogatory terms for women in business. “Wolfbait” referred to women who moved to the city from rural areas in seek of work. The term implied they were vulnerable and easy to prey on (EW). “B-Girls and G-Strings” was a chapter stating a woman’s only role in the business world was as a Burlesque dancer, a barmaid, or a brothel worker. Our founders Shirley and Jenn reclaimed these terms to destigmatize s*x- and service- work (and other undervalued and underprotected forms of labor), as well as to empower the women in business kicking ass and taking names in the working world. This people-driven project couldn’t have lasted this long without the support and participation of our customers and vendors. We thank you for embracing us in this community and giving your love and support to not only us, but all the artists and microbusinesses that we represent. Come wish us a Happy B-Day this week.
