My favorite cloth this season

Donegal tweed is one of the most distinctive fabrics in classic menswear, originating in County Donegal on Ireland’s northwest coast. Traditionally handwoven from wool, it’s best known for its colorful flecks and irregular neps scattered across a more subdued base cloth. Those tiny bursts of color give Donegal its unmistakable depth and character.

Unlike the more structured appearance of many English tweeds, Donegal has a naturally rustic, relaxed elegance. Traditionally it was made from locally sourced wool with yarns dyed in colors inspired by the Irish landscape—mossy greens, peat browns, stone greys, heather, rust, and ocean blues. Typical versions are woven with rugged heritage cloths, yet this season Loro Piana has made a remarkably soft and luxurious interpretation.

The more you look, the more interesting the cloth becomes.
