Kipepeo brings African culture and modern design to children’s fashion. Kipepeo (butterfly in Kiswahili), uses local fabric called kitenge to produce charming, beautiful, bright, children’s clothing for the global market. Kitenge (vitenge is the Swahili plural) is made of cotton fabric with wax print. It is made by imprinting a pattern of melted wax onto the fabric and then dying it. The beauty of

kitenge is that it tells stories, and because of the wax technique used no two bolts of fabric are identical, making each piece that you buy unique. It is very popular in Tanzania, walking down the street in Dar es Salaam you can’t go more than a few steps without seeing women dressed in the traditional kitenge. Women wear the beautiful fabric tied around their waists in the style of a sarong or sewn into beautiful dresses. But, more often you will see adorable babies wrapped up in little kitenge bundles on their mamas’ backs.
