If you grew up on the South Side, Ford City was never just a mall.
It was one of those places that somehow became part of your life without you even thinking about it.
You went there for school clothes, new shoes, birthday gifts, Christmas shopping, or just because your family needed to get out of the house. Sometimes you didn’t even buy anything.
You just walked around, grabbed something to eat, looked through the stores, and somehow spent half the day there.
For a lot of Chicago families, Ford City holds memories that go way beyond shopping.
You remember being a kid and trying to keep up with your parents.
You remember meeting friends there when you got older.
You remember that feeling when the mall was packed around the holidays and everybody seemed to be there at the same time.
The parking lot, the food court, the stores you always stopped at… it all became part of the South Side routine.
Places like this remind you how fast Chicago changes.
Stores come and go.
Buildings change.
People grow up and move away.
But somehow the memories stay exactly where we left them.
For generations of South Siders, Ford City was there through childhood, teenage years, raising families, and everything in between.
1965 to 2026 is a long run.
And for anyone who spent part of their life walking through those doors, Ford City will always feel like a little piece of home.
