This inspiring story covers fashion design, empathy, homelessness issues, employment opportunities and workforce education, perseverance through hardship, philanthropy, and more. Maybe consider sponsoring one of these coats for someone living on the street in extreme temperatures this winter, just $150 to make a big difference in one person’s life.

Follow A Mighty Girl for more inspirational stories like this.

Veronika Scott was a design student at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit when her teacher, Stephen Schock, challenged her class to create a product that filled a need, rather than satisfying or creating a fad. Veronika's design was a coat for homeless people that could transform into a sleeping bag, since in her city, she says, "you are constantly faced with the homeless epidemic." Not only did her design win an International Design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America, it became the catalyst for something far more transformative than she could have imagined -- this winter, the non-profit organization she founded will distribute its 100,000th convertible coat!

Veronika originally designed the coats seeking input from people at a homeless shelter. After receiving feedback from people who used the prototype over a frigid Detroit winter, she refined the design to create her final version which, in addition to being waterproof and windproof, transforms from a coat into a sleeping bag at night and converts into an over-the-shoulder bag with storage in the arm sockets when not in use. At right, Takecia, one of the seamstresses, shows how it looks when converted into a sleeping bag.

While the EMPWR Coat design has earned many accolades, one of Veronika's major breakthroughs came from an encounter with a homeless woman who told her that she didn't need a coat but a job. As a result, since its founding in 2012, Veronika's organization has hired over 150 people, predominantly women, from homeless shelters to make the coats. Over the years, her non-profit group, the Empowerment Plan, has developed an innovative employment model that is deliberately transitional; most employees spend two years working there before moving on to another job.

Roughly 60% of the workers' 40-hour-work week is dedicated to coat production, while the remaining 40% is dedicated to on-site programming such as tutoring to obtain a GED, driver's education, domestic violence support, financial literacy, or other supports to address whatever challenges a particular individual is facing. The results speak for themselves: 100% of their former employees have stable housing a year after leaving the organization.

Veronika's motivation for this work comes out of her own experience. Born to parents who struggled with addiction, she often didn't have stable housing as a child and understands what it's like to be judged for being poor. She confronted such low expectations about her workers when she first started the Empowerment Plan.

“Everybody told me that my business was going to fail -- not because of who I was giving my product to but because of who I was hiring," Veronika reflects, "They said that these homeless women will never make more than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich -- you cannot rely on them for anything. And I know my ladies enjoy proving everybody wrong."

Since that time, her group has distributed nearly 100,000 coats across all 50 states and 22 countries -- including packing and shipping a record 1,804 coats in a single day to their partners in California last week. Each coat costs $150 to sponsor and is distributed free of charge to those in need through partnerships with outreach organizations nationwide. Yet demand far exceeds supply: nearly 2,000 people are on the waitlist in need of a sponsor for the convertible coat.

"It's been a really challenging year for our organization," observes Erika George, the group's chief development officer. "We've seen increased demand (for coats), and individuals we are hiring are coming in with way more barriers." This increased demand is a reflection of the fact that in 2024, the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night was 771,480, the highest ever recorded. With food prices and housing costs continuing to rise this year, more people than ever are struggling.

This growing crisis only underscores the importance of their work. As they prepare to distribute their 100,000th coat this winter, Veronika and her "ladies" continue proving their detractors wrong. Veronika, who was named one of "40 Under 40: Young Leaders Who Are Solving the Problems of Today" by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, continues to demonstrate that local manufacturing -- and training local workers -- is not only possible but essential.

"I think we're going to show a lot of people: you think it's outdated to do manufacturing in your neighborhood, but I think it's something that we have to do in the future," Veronika asserts, "where it's sustainable, where you invest in people, where they're not interchangeable parts."

” 3 – Fashion, the third most polluting industry and produces about 10% of our annual carbon footprint – more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined! And GHG emissions are not the only problem with the fashion sector: it also consumes enough water to quench the thirst of five million people every year, and creates millions of tons of plastic and other waste that pollute our air and oceans.

“The solution is simple: move away from fast fashion, buy fewer but better quality pieces of clothing, and opt for sustainable brands that disclose their environmental impact transparently and act to reduce it.“

There is no better time than now to start thinking about investing in your wardrobe, from shopping for quality fabric garments that can withstand basic wear and tear/regular washing, to making your clothes last longer with relatively simple repairs and reinforcement (zippers/patches/mending), to having your clothes altered to fit better while reinforcing your confidence when wearing them.

Whether shopping for clothing for a job interview, a formal/wedding event, or everyday wear, please consider your buying power through shopping sustainably at secondhand/vintage/discount stores, and then having these clothes altered for your specific body shape. The trick is knowing your measurements (bust/chest, true waist, hips, inseam for starters), using a measuring tape when shopping, knowing how to look at the inside seams of a garment to see if it can be let out, and understanding quality fabrics.

Hi Everybody, it's been awhile since I've posted, but I'm still here, sewing sewing sewing!

Here's a long answer to a couple FAQs, what is your turnaround time for alterations, and what is the *price?

As a one person sewing business, turnaround time is really more subject to my current workload at any given time, as I have to prioritize sewing jobs by hard deadlines (i.e. wedding date, job interview date, homecoming dance date, funeral date…) vs no hard deadline. So if you need alterations done in time for a particular event, I can tell you whether I can meet that deadline or not. If you don’t have a hard deadline, I can give you an estimated turnaround time that folds your sewing job into the roster of my existing jobs. For example, a customer recently needed his suit jacket sleeves lengthened within a couple days for his job interview, which meant his sewing job jumping the workload line, and I happened to be able to accommodate. But I can’t always promise that I have that flexibility to deliver. It also depends on how technical the requested alteration is. I’d rather underpromise and overdeliver by saying, for example, give me two weeks and I may have it done sooner.

Regarding price for alterations, I always say I can give you the most accurate price estimate in person with a fitting, taking into account the fabrics and construction of the garments, and any design flourishes, if any. To illustrate this point, as it is raining bridesmaid dress hems and adjustments this time of year, I recently had multiple concurrent bridesmaid dress sewing jobs, with different prices on the finished jobs due to the different materials and dress styles to be hemmed:
- a more casual linen-type dress that needed to be hemmed from the waist seam;
- a 360° full-skirted chiffon dress hem with two acetate linings that also needed hemmed;
- a polyknit dress with a not-very-full skirt and one polyknit layer that also needed hemmed;
- a semi-full chiffon dress, with a slit, and two less full acetate layers attached at the slit, that also need hemmed...

So if you say how much is it to hem a bridesmaid dress, I will give you a long answer for clarification, followed by a request to schedule an appointment for a fitting to give the most accurate estimate.

-->That being said, for most concise inquiries, with minimal back and forth Q & A, please tell me what you need adjusted on your clothes, and whether you need them done in time for a particular event. Extra points if you can tell me the fabric/s, and or share a photo of you in the garment so I can see the style of the garment as it relates to the adjustment/s needed to fit your frame.

For a pretty thorough alterations price list by another company, based in Colorado (I compare my prices against theirs for reference, but the list does not account for all of these type of variables outlined above), you can get an idea of price-ISH, of what I would charge. This can help you decide whether or not you feel it is worth the trouble to alter a garment. http://www.tailor-studio.com/price-list.html

* Please note that alterations prices in the US are way different from clothing prices when buying new (aka alterations may cost more than you paid for the garment), as most clothing sold in the US is made/assembled in foreign countries exploiting lower wages but marked up for the retailer to profit. When you find new clothing on sale in the US, it is due to overproduction and overstock, as it is cheaper to over order and markdown or destroy (burn or landfill) than to place smaller orders or return unsold items. 14 years ago, Leap Day, NVISION opened, and then blossomed, and then expanded, and then...

Can't bring myself to celebrate per se, let alone make a new graphic, so let's call this year's 14th anniversary The 13th 2.0 🤷‍♀️

NVISION isn't what it once was, I'm still working through the COVID upheaval, and navigating the new smaller studio space, but I do have plans for more vintage product shop-ability, soon.

Meanwhile, keep those sewing jobs coming in, please and thank you! 💕

On this day 13 years ago, Leap Day 2008, I opened NVISION.

On this day 1 year ago, I was crazy sick and missed my own anniversary party, including the TV camera crew that came to capture it (thanks, and sorry Kim!). Looking back, having spent 5 days super sick in bed back then, maybe it was COVID, we didn't know enough yet. But I digress.

On this day TODAY, I wonder about the stages of grief for the loss of the business I created, and transformed into something more than I ever imagined, and am now in the process of pivoting into a new version of itself, 300+ days into this pivot. It took me a couple months to fully decide on that pivot, and another month or so to announce it publicly, that I would not be reopening the shop or returning to "business as usual." I'm still figuring out what the future holds for NVISION, making it up as I go, closing one chapter, and opening the next.

NVISION is still alive, I'm still doing clothing alterations and repairs, and still getting settled in the new location, 1546 Knowlton Street, by appointment only. I'm unable to accommodate browsing appointments in the way shoppers might expect. But I AM able to personalize a shopping appointment tailored to your tastes/size/product category needs. And I will return to posting vintage clothing and accessories for purchase online and through the website, SOON. Stay tuned for updates.

❤️ In the meantime, please reach out through voicemail or text to 513-542-4577, or email [email protected]. ❤️

If you've ever worn DENIM, let alone blue jeans, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend you take the time to watch this American Experience | PBS documentary, Riveted: the History of Jeans, linked below. It swings broadly with the true stories of how denim came to be, through the lenses of culture, race and class, from practical applications to ubiquitous fashion, and all the lost/buried stories of who is and isn't credited, to all the ways denim is worn today. Plus the magic of indigo, the controversial ways in which overalls have been worn, and how we've landed on the words denim, dungarees, and blue jeans, it's not what you'll find on Wikipedia!

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/riveted-history-of-jeans

Also, if you're so inclined, please give a follow to Fashion Historian Jonathan Square's page Fashioning the Self in Slavery and Freedom for more historical fashion discussion and musings.

I will make my TV premiere on tonight's episode of American Experience | PBS, which explores the history of denim in the United States. Though denim is often associated with the Old West and the Gold Rush, rough, durable workwear made from "jeans" were worn by enslaved people prior to the mid-nineteenth century. The broadcast will stream live with the broadcast, which you can access here: to.pbs.org/34gPjo7 or via the PBS Video app on your streaming device.
