This Thanksgiving, and for the last month, all I’ve been able to think about are the transgender woman who were stuck in these n**i concentration camps. Who had to watch others be liberated by the allied forces while they were rounded up and sent to prison. They committed no crimes, hurt no one, they just tried to live their most honest life.

It’s not easy being LGBTQ+ today. We have challenges and trials that we should never have to face. But the trials we have today are made better because of the change brought on by those before us.

I think about these women and the torch they carried, if only through their story, and the work that was done because of what they had to endure. My life has been made better because of them and I hope 20 years from now the LGBTQ+ community will be in a better place because of the struggles we’ve had to endure and the work we’re doing.

I’m grateful for these women and men. I’m grateful to be involved in the fight for equality. I’m grateful for the struggles I’ve been through and how they’ve shaped who I am. I’m grateful to carry this torch and I hope when my time comes I can pass it knowing I gave it my all. I hope to have a fraction of the courage these women had and I’m grateful to all those involved in this fight.

As Transgender Awareness Week comes to a finish I want to reflect on the importance of transgender activism.

Every generation for transgender people has it slightly easier than the previous generation. This is because of the work done by those who have come before us. It’s our work that will pave the way for those coming after us and it’s our responsibility to carry the torch high and pass it to them knowing we did all that we could.

One day transgender youth will exist in a world where they are limited only by the same challenges their cisgender peers face and then true equality will have been attained. Until that day comes, we must advocate on behalf of all those who cannot.

Happy Transgender Awareness Week everyone.

Before I came out to my friends and family, while I was in a world of pain being crushed with fear and doubt, my partner showed me a video about what Pride meant to different people.

The one that hit me the hardest was actually the most confusing. One of the people on the video said that Pride was about loving yourself. At the time I was filled with so much self hate, guilt and shame that hearing someone say that just confused me.

As I started coming out to people I started to love myself. The more people I came out to, the more self love I felt. Even if their reaction was bad, and there were plenty of those, I became more and more okay with who I was. I never forgot that video, and whenever someone asks me what Pride is I tell them that Pride is about loving who you are.

So if you're struggling with who you are, where you're at, or the road you're faced with traveling. Remember that you're special, that you’re beautiful, and that learning to love yourself is a wonderful accomplishment. One that everyone deserves to achieve.

This comment means so much coming from someone who is cis because it shows they understand. Not being okay in your own body is traumatic, and doing what you need to do to become okay is a beautiful, liberating and harmonious experience.
