Simon the Unsinkable Ship Cat

In 1949, during the Yangtze Incident aboard HMS Amethyst, a scrappy black and white cat named Simon became a hero. After surviving a shell blast that injured him badly, he returned to duty — killing rats, protecting rations, and lifting the crew’s spirits.

Simon was awarded the Dickin Medal and remains the only cat to ever receive it. He passed away from his injuries shortly after the crew’s return, but his courage lives on.
