We’ve had quite a few new followers lately, so I wanted to do a quick little introduction!
Hi everyone, I’m Jessica—most people call me Jess. I’m a mom of 4 and an Army spouse, and the face behind Behind the Seams.
My journey started as a teenager with a small side hobby called Ruthie’s Sewing & Crafts, where I made memory bears, skirts, culottes, and a mix of other fun projects to earn a little extra money. About 13 years ago, I rebranded and began focusing more on formal gown alterations and customizations—and that’s when Behind the Seams was born.
While formalwear is my main focus, I still love creating other pieces, especially anything baby-related. You’ll see some of those projects pop up here and there! Memory bears are also very close to my heart, and I’ll be sharing more soon about how you can sponsor a bear to be sewn for a military family in remembrance of a fallen soldier.
I truly love what I do, and I’m so grateful I get to do it from home—wherever the Army takes us.
For a little background: I’m coming up on 19 years in the sewing world, with 17 years in formalwear and 15 years focused specifically on alterations. All together, that’s about 25 years behind a sewing machine in one way or another.
Thanks so much for being here 🤍
*also realized we need a recent family photo 🩷🧵🪡
