KING TIDE MUSSELS

Last week the winter king tides opened the reef for a short window in the afternoon. We grabbed buckets and gloves and went out to harvest mussels by hand while the tide was low, moving carefully across the rocks and tidepools as the reef filled with crabs, starfish, fish, and the occasional octopus.

Back at the house the mussels were cleaned and cooked into a pot of steamed mussels in white wine with warm bread on the side.
