If you love ruffles here’s some that will tickle your fancy! 💃🏾

These are 2-D Fashion Flats (flat sketches or flats) that are used to develop and visualize your ideas and define your collection✨. When merchandising you can use these to mix and match styles to see what’s in ✅ and what’s out ✖️.

Sewist tip- Fashion flats are similar to the drawings on the back of the pattern.

Here’s to an amazing weekend!

You Got This!

Don’t think you can start your own fashion brand?

Yes ✨You ✨Can✨

Don’t have:

❌ Fashion Design Degree
❌ Sewing Skills
❌ Hand Sketching Skills
❌ Industry Connections

Don’t believe the hype you don’t have to KNOW all the things.

I heard a quote by “you have everything you need” and that’s so true! You don’t have to know or do everything in the fashion design process. Sometimes it just takes some research and/or finding someone that can spit some knowledge on the process to get you going in the right direction.

How to start a fashion brand without going to fashion design school! ✨

Idea- A thought that you believe is unique and/or solves a problem for your self and others. A thought that provokes you to want to take action.

Market- Do your research. Search the market and see if your idea has already been done. If so, see what could be done better or how you can make it more specialized to focus on a specific market.

If you’re a sewist at some point you’ve sewn for fun (just starting out), fit (can’t find clothes that fit your needs), or fashion (can’t find clothes that compliment your style) but for either of those sewing reasons you may have seen at a given time where fit could be improved in your ready to wear (RTW) garments or noticed a gap in the market. Use your sewing/fitting skills where you’ve had to overcome those obstacles to see if there is a market for your idea.

Funding- Having an idea is great and knowing you have a potential target market for your product is even better but having funding to back those ideas for materials, design, and production is an essential key. Be thinking about how will you fund your fashion brand? Bootstrap, personal/business loan, investors, crowdfunding, or grants.

The is great resource for business planning. Also, check with your local fashion/art associations as they provide grants to related businesses.

Having done your research and knowing your target market will help establish your business plan as it will be needed for securing most business capital outside of bootstrapping.

Design Process- Write down your ideas. Sketch out your thoughts. Even if you’re not the best drawer just get your ideas down so you can visualize your initial thoughts. Starting an inspiration and mood board is great for this step. The design process as it is multi-step process but this will get your ideas flowing in the first phase of the design process.

December is here! Its Sagittarius season, it’s my Birthday month and I’m really excited to be celebrating my 37th B’Day and sharing what is BAM Design Lab and how it came about!

B. Au’Dona Mallory Design Lab, LLC. (aka BAM Design Lab) is a fashion design business where I help sewists, inspiring designers and startup business with fashion ideas get into production faster with fashion flats and tech packs for women’s sportswear (i.e., tops, pants, skirts, dresses, jackets, blazers). I started this business because I had a long-time dream of working in the fashion industry and I wanted to create a space where that dream could finally come to fruition.

As a long-time sewist while working my full-time job I always worked on self directed projects and some client work to keep my design skills up. This year I had a mindset shift on what I could do and how I could actually help the sewing community (where I’ve learned so much as a sewist), inspiring designer and startup businesses. Taking my fashion design skills to promote knowledge about the fashion design process and provide a service to those that don’t want to DIY a portion of their fashion brand.

With the help of my husband and trying to joggle all the things of being an entrepreneur, wife and mother to my adorable 2 year old. I’ve been able to make some strides in getting BAM Design Lab off the ground to bring you my tidbits of knowledge on the fashion design process. I don’t claim to know everything but I know little bit about a lot of things.

So that’s it! That’s why I’m here. I hope you find my page informational as I post more and feel free to engage with me here and future blog posts.

xoxo Brittany

I did a thing a few months ago and I was interviewed by for the podcast - we had a great chat about starting as a freelancer without industry experience, and it's dropping today 🤩! I’m excited and nervous at the same time because I’ve never really gone in depth about my fashion career journey, not used to talking about myself like that and hearing myself talk (feel me?)… so a few jitterbugs here 🙃. Hit the link below to catch the interview or on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

My website will be launching soon and you can learn more about me there and how I can help you start your own fashion brand DIY style or work with me!

Also join my email list the Lab and hear all things new there first!

If you've never thought about freelancing in fashion, you're not alone. But this designer realized the freedom amd flexibility are game changers.
