Treasure 🦋✨
Acrylic on canvas, 20” x 24”

Created for ‘This Inspired That’, an annual collaborative exhibition Open Door Columbus, so honored to be part of it!
My piece responds to ‘Finders Keepers’ by the amazing Maddie Wright. I was drawn to their lively color palette and contrasting line work.

Having recently returned from Costa Rica, I was inspired to include the tropical greener and beautiful blue butterflies which were in abundance all over the Jungle of Tirimbina reimagined through the lens of metamorphosis and becoming - A reminder that the true treasure of this life is in growth and transformation.

Come experience the dialogue at the closing reception + artist talk 💫

Call me the Hibiscus Queen! Introducing my latest mural
🌺🔥👑 Fire Burn 1878

In July of 1848, enslaved people in the Danish West Indies were declared free having organized a protest to fight for freedom. This ‘freedom’ was short-lived, as plantation owners quickly devised regulations forcing free-laborers by law, to sign contracts which bound them and their families to the plantations on which they worked. By signing these contracts, the laborers became slaves again, in all but name.

This mural was inspired by the October 1, 1878 St. Croix Labor Riot which transpired in several days of deadly rioting, looting and burning of hundreds of acres due to unfair wages. Among the leaders were "Queen Mary" Thomas, "Queen Agnes" Salomon, and "Queen Mathilda" McBean – who became known as "Queens of the Fireburn". These Queens have gone down in Virgin Islands history as heroes of resistance having stood up against the extreme hardships that the ‘Free’ had to endure at the hands of colonial power in the West Indies.

The red hibiscus ablaze on a wooden torch are a reminder that you can change your narrative. A spark of courage, in time, carves change. From the fire we can rise and create beauty.

Grateful for my partnership with for creative freedom on this piece.
