This was my college essay that got me into Fordham University that I wrote in 2010 when I was 17: LETS NOT FORGET!!!!
I am unique because I am a raver. I do not promote the common misconceptions of drug infested, orgy-promoting parties. I simply endorse the idea of PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. I am part of a union of people attempting to create a utopia in a treacherous society based on continuous punctuality and high-stress situations. I choose living over existing. I choose community over disunity. I choose peace and love over wars.
I have found myself as part of a fellowship where I feel completely comfortable being Me, a place where I can enjoy the company of people while looking like an idiot on the dance floor with compassionate companions who all have the common goal of escaping the realities of everyday living.
My emotional state of choice is euphoria. My nourishment of choice is love. My addiction of choice is musical technology. My religion of choice is harmony. My currency of choice is knowledge. My politics of choice is nil. My society of choice is utopia, though I know it will never occur. You may misunderstand us, you may disown us, you may reject us- but we can only hope you do not put a value on us because we would never put a value on you.
I was first drawn by the sound comparable to the heartbeat of a quiet lover’s chest while entangled in a fortress of love; to the quiet vibration of “aum” as people pray in masses to become one with the universe and all human beings. With the bass bumping my heartbeat, and everyone’s heartbeats around me, I came to realize we are equal. We are all human beings who all strive for ultimate happiness.
Upon realizing this philosophy, I began to let go of the conformities of society and embrace the uniqueness of individuals and the “weird” in everyone. I have begun to explore myself and dispel what I was brainwashed to become. I have begun to explore the hidden tombstones of my brain and view my reality, not everyone else’s definition of reality. I have begun to be an individual and grow up to be the person I always wanted to be: Me.
I am part of a group of individuals who care about each other, who laugh together, who listen to each other, who support each other. For one night which will occur on many nights, raving is all I need. I laugh, you laugh; I cry, you cry; I smile, you smile; I hate, you hate; I love, you love- we are not so different, you and I.
