The History of the Sporran, the Scots Gaelic term meaning purse.

What’s a guy to do if he needs to carry personal items knowing that his kilt does not have pockets? That’s why the sporran was created, to carry all those bits and pieces.

From at least the 16th century, sporrans were used to carry food, such as oats, and were originally worn on the hip. By the 19th century, it evolved into the more ornate style we see today, worn on a chain, front and center of the kilt, and carrying modern day amenities like keys, cell phone, and credit cards.

The military influenced the design and development of sporrans in the 18th Century, adding goat and horsehair options with silver or brass cantles.

In the 19th Century, the transformation shifted to a more decorative sporran influenced and popularized by Queen Victoria. The sporran with a mask/full head of an animal became popular during this era.

Today the sporran is an essential part of the Highland dress with styles ranging from very simply day sporrans (leather pouch), to the semi-dress sporran which has a bit of fur, to a formal dress sporran with fancy cantle and various fur options generally bought for weddings and special formal events.

Scottish Treasures offers a bespoke sporran service which allows you to design your own custom sporran. You can pick any cantle, fur option, leather color, sporran tassel style and tassel bell, to make it unique to you. You can also have your sporran lined with an inside pocket and a snap-on key fob.
