The quiet is what’s destroying me now. Quincy passed on 8/21 from a tumor in his abdomen after ten years with me. My Beagle was never quiet before. His nose was constantly working, sniffing the floor and air like he was tracking something only he could smell. Open anything remotely food-related and he'd start whining, then give me that big Beagle howl until I shared.
I'm 71 and live in public housing. We've dealt with roaches, bedbugs, and pesticides and insecticides being sprayed around the apartment. I keep wondering if Quincy got that residue on his fur and licked it off over the years. I'll probably never know, but I feel so guilty. I don't have much, but having him here helped me cope. Now there's no sniffing, whining, or howling. I'm completely alone.
