Tall and Skinny.........................................
As I mentioned yesterday in my post, this week is all about The Searchers and Doc Holliday. Well, today I am going to be talking in depth about the Indian scabbard that Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) carries in the movie, so get comfortable and get ready to lean a few things about this scabbard.
Tall and skinny is the title of this post because that is how the scabbard is made, VERY TALL and VERY SKINNY! But why? the answer is because the scabbard was actually made for a musket and NOT an 1892 Wi******er (lever action). In fact, there was NEVER EVER a Wi******er in the scabbard throughout the entire movie. Also, another fact, there was never a real rifle in the scabbard throughout the entire movie. Now before some of you start hammering me with Ethan pulls out his Wi******er and flings the scabbard in one swift move as he charges towards his brother's house (which is on fire), NO HE DOESN'T. What you see is a Hollywood trick. The trick is he pulls out the fake rifle and then when you see Ethan at the house, he has his Wi******er in hand, which your brain tells you that he pulled the Wi******er from the scabbard. I have posted a photo of this scene below and if you look at the rifle you can see that it is a fake.
Now what type of fake rifle are they using in the scabbard throughout the movie? From what I can tell it is a British Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket with the hammer and trigger removed. There are two versions of this rifle that I know of, one is a two-band rifle, and one is a three-band rifle. Both rifles look the same except the three-band rifle is a little longer. Mose Harper uses the two-band rifle throughout the movie, and his hammer has also been removed. Now is Duke using the two-band or three-band rifle in the scabbard? In my honest opinion I think he uses the three-band throughout "MOST" of the movie. Why do I think this? TALL and SKINNY 🙂 When Duke sits the rifle stock on the ground, the rifle comes to about his mid chest and he stood 6'4". I also believe that the rifle in the scabbard was modeled off the Enfield, but it was actually just a wooden rifle made to resemble the rifle. Doing this would cut out a lot of weight of the setup which would make it easier to carry in the movie and the way Duke throws this thing around you can just tell there is no weight to it. Now you only notice this after watching the movie a million times like I have done since starting this project. I have also noticed a lot of other things in the movie, but I will save these for a future post.
So, how am I going to make this scabbard? Answer, just like they did for the movie. This means you will get what you see in the movie. I will be making the fake Enfield rifle for my scabbard and if anyone wants one for theirs, I will make you one for an additional cost. Will you be able to put a Wi******er into this scabbard? Answer is NO. Well technically you can, but boy is going to look stupid. For those of you who are going to add this scabbard to your John Wayne collection, if you don't want to purchase the fake rifle from me and you want to make your own, I will give you photos and dimensions from my rifle to make your project a little easier on you.
At the present time I have 95% of all the bead work done for the scabbard and now I am drawing out the pattern for the scabbard. The end of the scabbard where the barrel goes is complete and looks pretty much like what you see in the movie, however I am reworking the end where the rifle actually goes into, as I keep changing things to make it more movie correct. This is me just changing the measurements of things as when they are all drawn out things look a little off, so I have to go back and adjust things, so it is picture perfect 😎
Below you will see photos of what I have talked about in this post and pay close attention to the rifle in the photos..................... 😉 They didn't even take the time to round off the corners of the stock. Also, I had mentioned in my past post that there were at least two different scabbards. When Ethan enters the fort to look at the girls you can see his scabbard is considerably shorter than the one he is carrying on horseback (also in the black & white photo). You can judge this by the distance from the beading under the scabbard (where the fringe ends) to the beading on the other end. The rifle stock doesn't stick out either in this photo, but all the other times the stock sticks out about six inches.
As mentioned before, when you buy something from myself or my team (EJ Leather Works and Ugly Outlaw Hats) you are going to get the most screen accurate wardrobe and props that anyone can make. We all put in a TON of research into our products to insure you get the best of the best.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this post and I hope that you learned more about this scabbard than you ever wanted to know about it....... 😆
