Uncle Jack Lee helped me grow through so many difficulties...he never shamed me for my attitude...never shamed me, always corrected me, with love and a laugh. He was (to me) a Great Example of being a good person.
I love you Unc, see ya in the and โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Edy Eichhorn

I've been standing in four inches of water since before dawn. You drove past me three times this morning. You didn't see me once.

I'm a Great Blue Heron. Four feet tall. Six-foot wingspan. The largest bird in your neighborhood.

And I'm functionally invisible because I don't move.

I'm standing in the drainage ditch behind the strip mall. The one between the Dollar Tree and the auto repair shop. I've been fishing here since 2019.

I stand motionless for twenty to forty minutes at a time. When a fish, frog, or crayfish moves within reach of my beak, I strike. My neck is an S-shaped spring loaded with specialized vertebrae that lock and release like a crossbow. The strike is faster than you can blink.

My eyes face forward with binocular vision โ€” like yours, not like most birds. That gives me depth perception precise enough to spear a small fish through moving water from two feet above the surface, adjusting for light refraction in real time.

Every evening I fly home to a rookery โ€” a communal nesting colony in the tallest trees near water. Our nests are four feet wide. The rookery has been in the same grove for years. If those trees come down, the colony doesn't relocate. It disappears.

That hunched shape you see flying at dusk with its neck folded and legs trailing โ€” that's me going home. Cranes fly with necks extended. Herons fold them. If the neck is folded, it's me.

๐Ÿฆ If there's a heron in your neighborhood:

- It returns to the same fishing spot at the same time almost every day โ€” once you know the schedule, you can watch it hunt
- Stay at least thirty feet back and move slowly โ€” it tolerates people but flushes if you approach too fast
- If you know where a rookery is, keep your distance during nesting season โ€” disturbance at the colony can cause adults to abandon eggs
- Drainage ditches, retention ponds, and shallow creeks are heron habitat โ€” the ugliest water in your neighborhood often holds the most impressive wildlife

I'll be in the same ditch tomorrow at the same time. I'm there every morning ๐ŸŒฟ
