A little thrift shop ramble from someone who’s loved this stuff long before it started showing up on trend lists…
Lately, I’ve been seeing article after article declaring that vintage china is “back,” blue and white dishes are “trending,” plate walls are “in,” brass is making a comeback, quilts are popular again, mid-century modern furniture is hot, chandeliers are having a moment, retro decor is everywhere, and even old cookbooks are suddenly desirable.
And while I love seeing people appreciate these things, part of me chuckles because… when did they ever stop being beautiful?
I’ve never needed a magazine, influencer, or design trend to tell me that antique china is gorgeous, that handmade quilts are treasures, or that a well-built vintage dresser has more character than most furniture you can buy today.
It does make me wonder: do people truly love these things, or do they only love them while everyone else does? What happens when the next trend comes along?
For those of us who grew up thrifting and antiquing, these pieces were never “out.” I spent countless hours digging through antique stores, flea markets, yard sales, and thrift shops with my mom and dad. That’s where I learned to appreciate craftsmanship, history, and the beauty of giving old things new life. It’s also where I learned to restore, revamp, and upcycle furniture instead of tossing it aside.
My advice? Stop chasing trends and start developing your own style.
Think about what YOU actually like. What makes you feel comfortable, inspired, peaceful, or happy in your space? Fill your home with things that tell your story, not someone else’s.
If you love blue and white china, hang it on the wall. If you love brass, collect it. If quilts make you happy, display them. If an old teapot, retro lamp, vintage cookbook, or weathered farmhouse table speaks to you, bring it home.
Create spaces instead of copy-and-paste rooms.
A home should reflect the people who live there, not whatever an algorithm decided was popular this month.
Because here’s the truth: trends come and go. Authentic style doesn’t.
And beyond that, things simply aren’t made the way they used to be. So much of today’s mass-produced decor is designed for a season. The pieces that have already survived 50, 75, or even 100 years have proven their staying power. They were built to last, they’re often better crafted, and choosing them is one of the most sustainable ways to furnish and decorate a home.
If you love it, it doesn’t matter whether it’s trending or not.
Vintage isn’t trendy to me.
It’s timeless.
