Why are Black women so often taught that love has to come with struggle?

So many of our movies, TV shows, and conversations normalize the idea that a Black woman has to endure disrespect, heartbreak, trauma, or years of “holding a man down” just to earn an average relationship.

That’s not a love story. That’s conditioning.

Black women deserve healthy love, soft love, peaceful love, and relationships that don’t require suffering as the price of admission.

How many jokes have we normalized that were actually rooted in insecurity?

Sometimes what looks like confidence is really self-deprecation we’ve learned to use as protection. But when we constantly make jokes about 4C and type 4 hair, we’re not just talking about ourselves. Young Black girls are listening too, and they’re learning what they’re “supposed” to believe about hair that looks like theirs.

What if we stopped making ourselves the punchline?

I’ve been thinking about identity, labels, and what it really means to be yourself. This isn’t meant to attack anyone or tell people how they should live. It’s simply me working through my thoughts and asking questions that I think are worth discussing. We don’t have to agree, but I do hope we can have the conversation with respect and curiosity instead of assuming the worst about each other.

The new Cheetah Girls reboot has people talking, but the bigger conversation is about representation. This isn’t about criticizing the young women who were cast. It’s about asking why so many reboots move further away from the diversity that made the original so meaningful. What do you think?

The conversation around Lupita Nyong’o being cast as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey feels bigger than one movie. To me, it reflects a pattern: Black women’s features are often admired until they’re on Black women.

Whether you agree with the casting or not, it’s worth asking why this debate looks so different from so many others.

We are way too comfortable making struggling mothers the punchline.
You don’t know who had a village, who grew up without one, who survived trauma, or who is learning how to parent while trying to heal themselves.
You don’t have to agree with every decision someone has made to recognize that compassion goes a lot further than cruelty.

The Nolan Xavier Wells story reminded me of something I witnessed years ago. This video is not meant to speculate about his case or suggest that’s what happened to him. It simply brought back a memory of a situation I personally witnessed where peer pressure and social coercion nearly turned deadly for a group of Black boys.

That experience made me realize how important it is that Black children and other children of color are prepared to navigate predominantly white spaces. We have to teach our kids that they never have to prove themselves, ignore their instincts, or risk their safety just to fit in or be accepted.

Sometimes the conversations a tragedy inspires are bigger than the tragedy itself.

The BET Awards finally felt like they remembered what they’re supposed to represent: celebrating Black excellence.

For a while, it felt like the focus shifted toward whoever was trending in the moment instead of honoring the artists who built the culture and set the standard. This year felt different. Seeing legends get their flowers, watching icons present awards to people who have truly put in the work, and seeing fashion that actually felt like fashion again reminded me why this show used to matter.

When Janet Jackson presents Teyana Taylor with an Icon Award, it means something. That’s legacy recognizing legacy.

This is the energy I hope BET keeps. Celebrate the people whose impact lasts, not just the people having a viral moment.
