Dress designed by Elsa Schiaparelli, late 1940s-early 1950s. Schiaparelli shuttered her atelier during the war. Although they didn’t have the novelty and humor of her pre-war clothes, her post-war collections were romantic, luxurious and artistically rendered.

Ensemble designed by Vera Maxwell, 1948. Wool, leather.Designed specifically for travel, the jacket has conspicuously practical oversized pockets—a style element explored by Cashin and McCardell, with whom Maxwell shared the credit for founding the "American look”.

“Propaganda” designed by Vivienne Westwood, fall/winter 2005-6. Silk.
Westwood said that the dress was her most important work to date. It is a virtuoso construction, draped, fitted and sweeping around in one line—in concept reminiscent of 1950s haute couture.

Woman’s top hat, Lilly Daché, c. 1945. Wool felt, foil wrapped yarn, silk net.

Lilly Daché got her start in the millinery business by working in a small shop in New York City. She and a friend bought the shop from their boss in 1924. She later recalled the first hat she made as the proprietress of her own shop; it was fashioned from scraps of velvet that were lying around. By the 1930s her business was flourishing. Besides designing for the public, Daché worked with Hollywood designer Travis Banton, producing hats to complement his dresses and suits for the movies.

Does anyone know how to make a basket like this. It is a core of rolled interfacing covered with fabric. Then ? A crocheted yarn to hold it together. It’s then sewn together with monofilament. It’s different than the cord baskets I’ve seen while reasearching. Also, is there a specific heavy duty zigzag sewing machine that will sew the cords together? It is very sturdy and stiff.
Thanks!!!

1990 Beach Ensemble by Christian Lacroix. Attached to this whimsically printed maillot swimsuit is a collar of gold “teeth,” an example of Christian Lacroix’s fondness for unexpected combinations. The oversize sun hat, sunglasses, and high heels complete an extravagant beachwear ensemble designed more for poolside lounging—and spectacle—than swimming. Museum at FIT.
