He won the calf roping World Championship at the very first National Finals Rodeo ever held. Then he came back eight years later and won the steer roping World Championship too. Two events. Two World Championships. One Del Rio Texas cowboy who never once forgot where he came from.

Born May 5 1932 in Del Rio Texas to Olin and Estella Cauthorn Altizer, Jim Bob grew up on a working ranch where his father lived by one motto that never changed — ranch first rope second. His father's guidance shaped everything that came after. Jim Bob became a Texas State High School Calf Roping Champion in 1947 and the National High School Champion in 1948. The foundation was built before he ever turned professional.

He joined the professional ranks in 1950 and spent the next twenty six years building one of the most remarkable dual-event careers the sport had ever seen. Seven roping titles at San Antonio alone. Five at Phoenix. Two at Houston. The NFR calf roping average winner twice. The National Steer Roping Finals average winner. Ten NFR qualifications as a calf roper and six as a steer roper — competing at the highest level in two completely different roping disciplines simultaneously across a career that put him in the top ten in the world standings for the majority of his professional life.

Then in 1959 at the inaugural National Finals Rodeo in Dallas Texas — the very first NFR ever held — Jim Bob Altizer won the calf roping World Championship. The first RCA member in history to earn a calf roping world title through the new season-ending championship event. His name is written permanently into the first page of National Finals Rodeo history.

He came back in 1967 and won the World Championship in steer roping — eight years later in a completely different event — proving that Del Rio Texas had produced something the sport had never quite seen before. A man who could do both at the highest possible level and win both when the biggest check was on the line.

They called him the greatest match roper of all time. He was always a fan favorite at match roping events — the kind of competitor that people bought tickets specifically to watch because they knew what they were going to see. Excellence. Every time.

Then when his professional career ended in 1976 he went home to Del Rio and opened his ranch to every young roper who wanted to learn. He conducted free roping schools and clinics for youngsters for years — never charging a dollar for the knowledge he passed on. The man who had won the first NFR calf roping title in history gave his expertise freely to every kid who showed up at his gate with a rope and a dream.

He passed away December 12 1997 at Del Rio at 65 years old.

Inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 — the inaugural class. The National Rodeo Hall of Fame. The Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame. The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Ranch first. Rope second. Two World Championships. The first page of National Finals Rodeo history.
