Today, on Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom and progress. But true freedom means equal access to quality healthcare for all.
As a physician, I'm committed to dismantling a troubling reality: disparities in wound care for patients with darker skin tones. For too long, the way we assess wounds was based on a limited view of skin pigmentation. This has led to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment, impacting patient outcomes.
As Maya Angelou said, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."
In that spirit, I'm proud to share our co-authored paper, “Disparities in Wound Care: a focus on pressure injuries” by Laura Swoboda, Ruth Bryant, Karen Bauer, Kara Couch, Barbara Bates-Jensen, Andrew Crow, Sarah Erslev, Donna Byfield, Maria Goddard, Jenneffer Pulapaka, Jonathan Johnson, Dimitri Beeckman, Valentina Dini;" published by the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care. This work sheds light on the challenges and proposes solutions for more equitable wound care practices.
We can all be part of the change. Let's and ensure everyone receives the care they deserve.
