Mini Mary McFadden collection coming to .NYC as part of my more formal offerings, two crinkle plisse gowns in the style that made her famous, and one piece which is a departure from that but incredibly cool and modern!
For those who don’t know, Mary McFadden, known as the ‘High Priestess of Fashion, studied design in both NY & Paris, then dropped out to work as Christian Dior’s public relations director, while dating Oscar de la Renta(!!), was a president of the CFDA, and once editor of Vogue South Africa.
Her designs, characterized by their shimmering liquid gold appearance using a technique called Marii, were worn by the likes of Jackie O, Estée Lauder and Diana Vreeland. They were gave the wearer an air of Grecian statue, always remaining on the wearable side of avant-garde, leading Vogue to credit her for changing the way women dressed in the 70s & 80s writing, “Though not hippie-ish in the least, they tapped into the prevalent fantasy of other places and other times.”
Sadly she passed away just last year in Long Island at age 85.
The 7th photo shows the dress version of the sequin halter top I have. Photo 8 of Jackie O wearing one of her pieces in ‘76. Last two photos of Mary herself in her home and a snap of her NYC bedroom in 1972.
Come get your piece of fashion history this weekend at the final Not-A-Normal Market at Barneys in NYC 🌟
