we rarely learn to love ourselves
by demonstration
humans!
worthy of love
and basically good
do we learn only by obstacle?
smelted via life’s crucibles?
rising
to the surface
recast
refining our edges
or, alas, misshapen
by the heat?
some of us
stay smoldering
some of us
deeply wounded
need patient,
gentler care
then you have the ones
seemingly untouchable
a child
handed the diva mic their whole life
focused on their
main character plotline
as a way
to earn esteem
by proof, jump through the hoops
accomplishments
as worthy of being?
shaking beneath the surface
fearful
the mask will crack
under the pressure
of performing goodness
our wounds
eventually surface
what do we cling to?
emotional support habituations
providing the illusion
of comfort?
we may perform goodness
to have our needs met
and our badness
may be performed
to have our needs met.
transformation
looks like holding
the whole coin—
not just
one side of it.
