The act of adornment is an intrinsic part of human culture, serving as a means of self-expression, identity, and social communication. As we move into 2026 this act continues to thrive, yet it is no longer coming from a society entranced with superficial plastic consumption but rather one that desires something much deeper.
Wearing her fur accented corset, custom patterned to fit her own body, and her hand embellished stockings, Emilie Yonker is a prime example of an artist seeking out adornment as a way to experience a certain depth of history, while learning slow technique, the value of materials, and etiquette along the way.
These beautiful items were exhibited in September for Detroit Month of Design, as part of our ongoing curatorial project ๐๐ฎ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ท ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ. This series of exhibitions will continue to serve as a means of study, carving out space for local artists and designers to tap into our true yearnings in these complex times we are living. Stay tuned โจ
