I get two questions when someone is looking to buy a cowhide rug.

1. How do they hold up with pets and kids?
2. How do you take care of them?

A cowhide rug is literally a cows hide. It is made of leather with the hair still attached. It has natural oils and a tight hair structure that help repel spills instead of absorbing them like a traditional fabric rug. Most small spills stay on the surface long enough to be wiped up before soaking in. Dirt, pet hair, and dust also tend to sit on top of the hide.

For normal cleaning, a quick shake outside or light vacuum is usually all it needs.
I’ve had cowhide rugs for years in my house and in the store and have never had to but, for a deeper clean you can take it outside and rinse it with a garden hose and mild soap. Then, lay it flat to dry.
