Sewing Summer Camp Recap: Week 6 💙
We wrapped up summer camps with our fastest-selling class of the season: No Fear Serger! 🎉 This camp was designed to help students feel confident using their sergers, from understanding the basics to exploring just how versatile these machines can be. We made our own underwear using the Ann Tilley Handmade pattern, experimented with sewing knits, and discovered all kinds of ways a serger can be used for both garment sewing and home projects.
Watching everyone’s confidence grow over the course of camp was the best part. By the end of the week, those sergers didn’t seem nearly as intimidating!
A huge thank you to everyone who joined me this summer at Freeman’s Creative. Every camp was filled with creativity, laughter, and so much learning. I’m already looking forward to next summer! Would you like to take a Serger workshop in the year to come? IF we have enough interest, we’ll try to plan a weekend workshop this winter!

Sewing Summer Camp Recap: Week 5 💚♻️👕
This week’s camp was all about giving clothes a second life! Our young makers (12-14 years old) learned how to upcycle and alter clothing by bringing pieces from home and transforming them into something new. We resized, remade, embellished, and created fun bag charms along the way.
I loved watching everyone discover that a little creativity can completely change a garment. Every project reflected each student’s unique style, and it was amazing to see their confidence grow as they learned new sewing techniques.

Sewing Summer Camp Recap: Week 4 💙🧵✨
This week was our Quilting Explorations camp with adults, and we packed so much into just a few days! We covered several classic quilt block construction techniques while everyone experimented with color, pattern, precision, construction and confidence building on the machine. By the end of camp, each student had created beautiful mini quilts/potholders while building a strong foundation in quilting blocks. It was so much fun seeing every project develop in its own unique way. Do you have a favorite quilt block?
Teaching at Freeman’s Creative is one of my favorite parts of the summer. There’s nothing better than spending time with people who are excited to learn something new and create with their own hands. Special thanks to michelle for taking photos!

Sewing Summer Camp Recap: Week 3 💛🪡🌈
This week was all about quilting, and these young makers (8-12 years old) absolutely amazed me! We learned machine sewing basics while creating bag charms, potholders, and lap quilts. Every student got to choose their own fabrics and design their own layout.
One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching kids make creative decisions and seeing how different every finished project becomes with just 16 squares in each quilt. Have you ever sewn your own clothes? Our adult summer camp took on a big challenge- sewing PANTS and learning to use a paper pattern! Watching everyone build confidence, learn new skills, and leave with a handmade pair they can actually wear was so rewarding! What a fun week! I absolutely love teaching sewing at Freeman’s Creative. It’s such a welcoming space to learn, create, and connect with other makers. Thanks to everyone who joined this week!

Summer camp hosted by Freeman's Creative and taught by River Takada starts next week on Tuesday June 23rd! A note from River: I love this time of year- it’s a lot of indoor crafting time because it’s just too hot for me to be running around outside. And that means I’m going on my 12th or 13th year of summer camp!!! So fun! We have a few spots left in each camp. There are 3 weeks of kids and 3 weeks of adults.
