But there’s nobody inside, except for a few people cleaning out the building. The mighty looms that spun a billion yards of fabric for apparel and home furnishings over their half-century lifetime have gone silent.

The plant ceased operations at the end of June, according to Larry Martin, the former state senator from Pickens whose day-job for the past 37 years has been as corporate safety director for Alice.

“It has been a great run,” said Martin, who was planning to retire anyway. “It’s been a great experience. Good people, good folks.”
