What are we but a cosmos of collected memories? 🌌

Narrative identity is so fascinating. People have told me so many stories & it’s the way they’ve talked about themselves that I’ve noticed since childhood. What are we? Who are we? Are we the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves? Can we change or are we stuck? Do we notice either way?

During my time in the MFA program at Stony Brook, I was told my memoir pieces were a strength. It’s something I didn’t want to hear at the time. You gotta be reeeeal comfortable with feeling vulnerable. Who is?

I gave this little piece a chance because of my professor Roger Rosenblatt and my fellow classmates. Thanks guys.

A student this year said, “Mrs. Rufrano your life is so interesting. You’ve done so much. You should write about it.”

At 37 I find that to be a profound compliment. Sometimes I feel like I’ve lived a thousand lifetimes and other times I question if I’ve lived enough.

One thing is for certain, I’ve always been a dreamer, so is my dad. This micro non fiction piece is not a dream; we were both there, and it’s a moment from my life I think about from time to time.

I’m really proud of this one. I wrote it for my students to show them how to start in media res, to highlight how impactful a first line is, but I also wrote it for my dad and for the little girl who watched this unfold from the car window.

And thank you for all of who read it already and messaged me such kind, uplifting notes!

Have you met your wives yet?

We’ve been attending each other’s weddings for over a decade.

We’ve been in each other’s bridal parties or dutifully breaking down the dance floor.

We’ve had children together.

Bought houses together.

We’ve experienced hardship & loss together.

We certainly celebrate together.

Our husbands are best friends.

& they’re some of the kindest, supportive, hilarious women I’ve met in this life time.
