Old Man Sk8 Jam

Old Man Sk8 Jam Old Man Sk8 Jam... a brand, of sorts. But also a way to offer something to those of us that are still skateboarding even as we move into middle age and beyond.

9/11 impacted everyone in some way. On this day, remember the victims, the families and friends of those lost, and the heroes from that day. Never forget.

This little dude rips! I am 41 years older than him and checking out his Instagram gets me stoked to go skate. This drop-in is one of the gnarlier things I’ve seen, especially from a 6 year old.

Nearly 30 years ago, before I moved to San Diego, I shared an apartment with a friend for a few months. We lived in a suburban area just north of Baltimore City. One night while just hanging out there was a knock on the door. When I looked through the peephole in the door all I could see was Salman Agah’s face filling the entire view. I was understandably surprised and shocked as to why he was knocking on my door when I’d never met him. Turns out he was in town with Pat Smith (of Coda Skateboards). Pat, Jen (Pat’s girlfriend at that time), and my good friend Jeff were all working at Woodward Skatecamp but came back down to Maryland for the weekend and they brought Salman with them. We hung out for awhile talking skateboarding and probably about whatever was on the tv. We may have also eaten some pizza. Thanks for showing up at my apartment many years ago, Salman. Happy birthday, buddy.

Happy 50th birthday to Mike Vallely. A fellow Old Man that’s still ripping.

I shot this about 10 years ago, while I was living in San Diego. It’s Tony Hawk filming Jesse Fritsch doing a layback f/s rock-n-roll in a friend’s pool.
My friend, Hollis, was living in Encinitas overlooking a small canyon. His pool was ever so slowly sliding away from the house and into the canyon. He made the decision to have it removed. Before demolition there was a short time where it sat empty in his backyard. Hollis asked if I would be interested in skating it. I said sure, but asked if I could make a few phone calls to see if anyone else may be interested. I contacted a few people I knew would be interested and that lived not too far away. After some back and forth between myself, Hollis, and a few others, a day and time were picked. A few days later I met Jesse, Tony, Kevin Staab with his young son, and one other guy whose name escapes me, at a gas station a short drive from Hollis’ house. The pool was difficult to skate but you could get a good single shot at the face wall.
The session lasted about 2 hours or so and I have other photos, and probably some video, from this day but this photo is my favorite.

Growing up, Matt Hensley was one of my favorite skateboarders. His ‘stained glass’ pro model (originally by Jeff Klindt) was, and still is, one of my favorites. This is my tribute to that graphic. Available now on s/s shirts, l/s shirts, and sweatshirts.
